What is Broadband?

Broadband is the ability to view content across the internet including large files, such as video, audio and 3D. There are several bands of frequencies available for Broadband meaning that information can sent on many different frequencies or channels within the band concurrently, allowing more information to be transmitted in a given amount of time (much as more lanes on a highway allow more cars to travel on it at the same time).

How do I know if Broadband is available in my area?

To check to see if Broadband is available on your line go to our Broadband Checker. If Broadband is not available on your phone line you may still be able to get Mobile Broadband. Use our 3G coverage map to see if 3G Broadband is available in your area.

Broadband Speeds:

Broadband speed means how fast you can surf and download online. We say "up to" 2MB because the speed you actually get can vary depending on the quality of your line, how far you live from the telephone exchange, the wiring in your house and even the weather. This is the same for all broadband providers.

What equipment do I need?

It is recommended that you have a PC or laptop with a memory of at least 1024Mb (1GB). You will also need a modem/router. If you already have a modem/router then you can use this or you can order one while you are ordering your Perlico Broadband. Modems/routers can be wired or wireless. Choose the wireless option if you have more than one computer accessing the Internet in the same house, if your computer is not near your phone point or if you want to have access to the Internet anywhere in the house. In order for this wireless modem to work, your PC must also be enabled to receive Wireless (WiFi) signal. If you have a laptop/notebook computer, it is quite likely that the Wireless capability is already built in. This is worth checking if you are not sure. To check this on a Windows PC, just go to Start, Control Panel, Network & Internet Connections, Network Connections. If your PC is wireless enabled, you will see the following:

For Mac Users, go to System Preferences, then NETWORK and make sure it is enabled. It stays enabled until you switch it off.

What are usage allowances?

Broadband use is measured in GB (gigabytes) and with our Freedom Bundle packages you get a monthly 10GB or 20GB allowance. That's plenty to do loads of surfing and downloading. In fact, 85% of our customers use less than 6GB each month.

Switching Broadband Providers:

If you're switching broadband providers you'll need to get your Eircom Account Number (EAN code). This EAN or UAN is generally on your current phone bill or simply call your current provider to request it or and enter it when you join online.

What is Wireless Broadband?

Wireless broadband is the same as standard broadband in terms of performance, but works without your PC or laptop being connected to the router. Instead, the signal is sent wirelessly to the computer, allowing you to use the internet anywhere in your home. This also means than more than one computer can use the same internet connection.

What is Mobile Broadband?

With Mobile Broadband you can access the internet and email in your home or on the move and if you move house, it moves too! With Mobile Broadband you will need a 3G modem which plugs into whichever PC or Laptop you want to access the Internet from.

Email & Web Hosting:

Once you are a Perlico customer you can keep your current email address or sign up to a FREE perlico.net email address with FREE anti-virus and anti-spam filtering. We also offer the option to build and manage your own FREE website within My Account at www.perlico.com/myaccount.

How does Wireless Broadband work?

The internet signal comes in from your phone line to the router (also known as a modem), which then sends the signal wirelessly to any computer within range (usually up to 100m, although factors such as the thickness of your walls will affect this).

How secure is wireless broadband?

All wireless routers come with the facility to set up a WEP key, which is a string of letters and numbers which your PC or laptop must enter upon first connection (the information is then stored, so you will not need to enter it again on that computer), without which no computer can access your wireless signal. This key uses 128bit encryption, and is very secure. For further information about how to set this up, please consult the wireless router manual.

How much does Wireless Broadband cost?

Wireless Broadband costs exactly the same as Wired Broadband but you will need to purchase a Wireless Modem/Router. And when you buy a Wireless Modem when ordering Perlico broadband, we don't even charge you a broadband connection fee!
